What is the common currency used in major cities. Do merchants accept foreign dollars such as Canadian or US dollars?

I'm afraid only RMB is accpeted in most places of China. You can pay Canadian or US dollars to the merchants through the banks of China, but what they receive finally from the Banks is still RMB.
