About:Chinese Embassy in Japan

I am a US citizen currently living in Japan. I am planning on visiting Vietnam. I have a Visa for Vietnam and flight to Vietnam through China Air, but will be in China on layover for about 5 or 6 hours. My agency has told me that I might need a transit visa, and looking online, I see that several passengers going through China Air have experienced problems in transit.

For a mere layover, would a transit visa really be necessary?

If you will not leave the airside, you are not required visa during your transit in China.
