I am a british citizen in china and i have just recieved my F visa for 1 year, but a company now want to hire me, and they want to change my visa to a Z then later apply for a resident permit. Do you still have to leave china and apply for a z visa in your home country, or can you change to a z in china? i have just arrived in china, so i hope i dont have to go back to England again..

Yes, you still have to leave China to apply for a Z visa in your home country or Hong Kong. It is very hard to get Z visa within Mainland China.
