In late April/early May I will be visiting Beijing and Anguo for a tour about Chinese herbs. Then I am planning to stay in Beijing until early May. I would also like to visit Chengde. I liked your recommendation that you actually could spend several days there, hiking and exploring the temples at a relaxed pace. My question is this: how will May Day affect travel and tourism for Beijing and/or Chengde? I am trying to figure out whether trains will be running, how long the holiday really lasts, whether it's best to see Beijing celebrate it, or whether it's best to be in Chengde.
