1. If i am paying for the cost of my travel to China and will be staying at a hotel, do i still have to answer 2.8 (contact unit in China) or 2.9 of the Visa application form?

2.I was in HK and Macau on a 1-week holiday last year and will be going to beijing by april of this year. In 2.4 of the visa application, "have you ever visited China before", what do i answer? Do i say "yes" and put HK and the dates when i was there? Or do i say No because I did not need visa when I went to HK?

1. you don't need to answer 2.8 or 2.9 on the visa application form, just write N/A on the blank form

2. Have you ever visited China before? If ‘Yes’, please specify date, places and purpose of the recent visit is on the 4.1 of the new visa application form. You can say Yes and put HK and Macau and the dates when you were there.
