When was the Great Wall of China built and what was it built for?

The construction work lasted from Western Zhou Dynasty (11th century BC - 771 BC) to the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), more than 2,000 years. Almost every dynasty has been involved. It was built to defend against attacks from the northern tribes.
