About:Xinjiang Travel

Hi,
My friend and I are doing a charity drive to Ulaanbatar, Mongolia called the 'Mongol Rally' and were considering passing through the Xinjiang region in August. First of all, is it possible for us to drive from the Western border with either Kazaakhstan or Kyrgyzstan, through the region and into Mongolia? Is it safe for us to do so? If so, please could you give us an idea of what route you would advise, what entry/exit requirements we would have to meet and any other advice that comes to mind?

Sincerely,
Sambo

Yes. You can. For applicants who apply for special tour (self-driving, hiking, cycling, horse-riding, hot air balloon, or other expeditions) to China, they should provide a visa notification form issued by China National Tourism Administration or the tourism administration of related province, autonomous region or municipality directly under the Central Government.
