About:China Visa Renewal and Extension

Hi,
I am on a 180 day L visa that will expire in March 2010. I want to stay for 1 extra month to do some traveling with my wife. Can I simply apply for one at the PSB (is an extension standard?) or should I try a visa service company? How much ahead of time can I/should I apply?
Thanks,
Liam

You can apply for visa extension at the local Exit & Enter Department under PSB, in fact, you will be issued a new visa on your passport to allow you to stay in China for a longer time.

You need not apply for you new visa (it is never an extension) until the last day of your existing visa. It takes 5 days to process for the normal fee, however most PSB Exit and Entry offices offer faster service for an extra fee. But there is no point, because you can legally remain in China without a visa while they are processing your new visa. Make sure o have a photocopy and the receipt for your passport in case the police ask for it or if you need to get hotel accommodation. I once gained 10 free days this way because there was a public holiday when no visa processing occurred. Make sure you have all the correct paperwork...so going one day early is a good idea. The most commonly forgotten piece of paper is your residency, either from the hotel where you will be staying that night or from the Police for the locale where you are staying (but this is complicated and it's easier to sat in a foreigner accredited hotel for 1 night. But you will need to check in early as the doco must be for the night of the day you are applying, not the one before.
