I will be going to xian for five days in early january, I know it will be very cold, what places are still ok to visit then? Would you inisist on visiting a hot springs?

Most places in Xian are still okay to visit, such as the terra cotta warriors, City Wall, Drum/Bell Tower, Big and Small Wild Goose Pagoda, Shaanxi History Museum. I am not insist on a hot spring anyway. You have enough time and you may consider to go to the hot spring in east Tangyu village which is not close to the city proper.
