About:Hong Kong Travel

I plan to use an Octopus card for taking both buses and trams in Hong Kong. When does one pass the card over the card reader? On Entry. on exit, or at both times? Travel guides do not make this small but important fact clear. Thnaks!

Thank you! But how does the bus company know how far someone has ridden the bus? Or is the fare the same for a particular bus or route, no matter where one gets off? Just curious. Seems unfair for the short-distance riders if that's the case.
