About:Getting to Urumqi

Dear sir,

Xinjiang is one of my destination and I'm interested to travel to Kanas lake and somewhere else around there. Would it be possible to go there by local transportation and find accommodation on my own?

Or should I book a tour package from agency in Urumqi?
