I'm thinking of going to Nanning for a couple of days in January 2011.Is it possible to get there from Hong Kong around the 21st of January and go to Guangzhou on the 25th?I know Chinese new year is coming, but some say it is 100% impossible to travel, others say it is just a lot more crowded.

Yes, the Chinese New Year is coming, but it is OK for you to travel from HK to Guangzhou.  It is a little crowed during that time and may be a little hard to get train or flight tickets. You need to book your transportation ticket in advance.
