hi, Mr K. The two buses depart from different place. Bus 916 departs from the bus station outside Exit B of Dongzhimen Subway Station, close to the exit& entraven to Airport expess line. The street name is Dongzhimen Wai Da Jie. Bus 936 departs from Dongzhimen Wai Xie Jie. A bit further than 916 bus stop and then turn left to that street. The bus 936 is at Dongzhimen Long-distance Bus Station, also known as 东直门枢纽. you can show this to the taxi driver if you can find it yourself.

1) To catch the 916, where do I take it from and where do I get off? I read from some threads that 916 departs from the Dongzhimen Long Distance Bus Station, and here you say it departs outside the Subway Station. And where do I get off?

Bus 916 (from Dongzhimen)above subway station, 936 (from Dongzhimenwai) at Dongzhimen long-distance bus station. Get off at Huairou Bei Dajie （怀柔北大街，Qingchun Lu Beikou is also fine）. I saw bus 916 bus passing through when I took another bus to Ikea area at the bus stop If I remember correctly.
