About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

I recently expired my Visa by several days, but was told to get certain requirements that included a registry form of temporary residence from Police, which i got! However, on submitting the requirements, the exit and entry admin. Public security in charge of the Visas took everything from me with the passport,(for renewing my Visa) only leaving me with a very small paper headed: "Acceptance Receipt", with a few of my particulars! My question is: As i wait for my visa to be out in 5days time, am i legally allowed to cross to other cities/towns and even be able to be accomodated in hotels legally? or i have to stay ONLY and EXACTLY where the registration form of temporary residence states? Waiting for your kindly advice! Thank you.

You need to wait for your visa at the place where the registration form of temporary residence states because the Acceptance Receipt with a few of your particulars does not apply outside your local region of application

Thanks so much peter for your great response. But does that "acceptance Receipt" permit me to go and stay in a hotel in the same region?
