Yes, you need to apply for a Chinese visa in advance through Chinese embassy in Thailand. No visa-on-arrival is available until Next Jan. And also Chinese visa can not be applied from HK if you are short-time visitor there.

The visa on arrival for Zhuhai city or Shenzhen city only is always uncertain and when I last checked only available to a very few nationalities, and only for a maximum of 5 days. The Asian Games might well have caused the issue of these visas to be suspended, and also visas being issued from HK. However I would be surprised if no visas at all were being issued in HK but Ms Miles has said it's not possible now.... so overall I would recommend you get a visa in advance.
