Nanjing has airport but very few flights to and from Shanghai and no flight in the afternoon, because these two cities are very close to each other. There are more than 130 trains every day including many high speed trains which takes only 1.5 hours between Nanjing and Shanghai. So, not necessary to take airplane at all.
