I have a ipad of mine own for using during the trip.  Am I allowed to take another brand new ipad and iphone in boxes? thanks

Yes, you can. If it is for personal use, then no tax is needed. But in this way, you need to take it out of china when you are leaving China. If it is not for personal use, then you'll need to declare it to the customs.
