About:Chinese Embassy in Singapore

Hi & gd-day to you!
I am assisting my friend (a foreign worker) to check whether he can have his passport extended as it expire on 03 Aug 2011, as he intent to go back on Feb 2011 to celebrate the Lunar New Year festival with his family?

The passport requirement for China visa is 6 months validity when apply for it. If your friend are planning to visit China in Feb next year, that is to say, he needs to apply visa to China in Jan. or Dec. In this case, his passport are ok for use. No need to renew it.
BTW, if your friend is Singapore citizen, he can enter and live in China for 14 days without a visa.
