Hello, Help! I am a lone lady travel and do not speak Chinese arriving Oct 5 2220hrs Xiaoshan. I was intending to head for a day in Shanghai before leaving for Beijing sometime the following evening. I am interested in the scenic side of China rather than glitz of a big city.
Would I be better to stay in Hangzou? Assuming the answer is yes, any suggestions on where to stay which is clean not too expensive, how to get there and what highlights I should not miss would be greatly appreciated.
To get the most from the day then travel to Beijing Would you fly or train? I don't know how long train would take.

Yes, Hangzhou is a good place to stay, the West Lake, Lingyin Temple and Six Harmonies Pagoda are all the local highlights..of course, water town Zhouzhuang or Tongli are also worthy to visiting if you have plenty of time...From Hangzhou to Beijing, i suggest you take a flight directly, but you may also take an overnight train to Beijing, which takes about 11 hours by D train..
