Yes, you need to apply for a Tourist visa in advance through Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC in HK. The requirements for an L visa are: your valid Canadian passport, one passport photo, an application form, return ticket, hotel reservation in China. General processing time is 4 working days.
