You need to apply for China tourist visa (L visa), the below documents are required:
1. your passport
2. one passport photo
3. one properly completed visa application form
4. New Zealand Permanent Residence and its copy

You need to apply for the L visa before you enter China, you'd better apply for it 1 month before your departure. the single-entry visa is only valid for 3 months, if you apply for it too early, it will expire before you use it.

Yes, If you want to apply for a L visa, you should prepare the passport, residence certificate, visa form, and one photo.Maybe sometimes they will ask for a plane ticket. It process 5 days more or less.
