Mr.Dickson, you have to leave China and apply for a China work visa in Uk, then return to China, generally speaking, it is hard to change your L visa to Z visa. However, if you work in a public school or a public university/college, the school or university can help you to get a Z visa within Mainland China, then you don't need to exit China.

You should not go abroad to apply for a Z visa, you can change your L visa to Z visa without leaving China.
