The hun was a nomad in North China. To pretect the inland China from intrusion of the Hun, the Great Wall was firstly built. There was no huns in later dynasries because of the national fusion. The reason why they were defeated should be related to their nomad characteristic, I think.

well, the Huns were one of the biggest enemies of China. People think they were brutal and cruel to the Chinese that's also why they needed the great wall.
