About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

Hi, I will fly from Chicago to Macau, and Shanghai is my transit, and I will take American airlines from Chicago to Shanghai and then take Air china from Shanghai to Macau, i will be in Shanghai for about 3 hours, Do I need a tourist or transit visa in this case? since I guess I will need to get my luggage at the baggage claim and go through immigration,right? thank you

You don't need a transit visa even though you go through the immigration after getting your luggage. No visa is required for USA citizens who transit Shanghai airport for less than 48 hours (going out the airport is permitted)
