i am planning to visit lijiang and further on to deqin (meili snow mountains) during end of dec.we are a group of 8, is it recommend to book any guesthouse in advance?and also,is the sunset especially early during the winter times?

Yes, a bit earlier in winter. Fei Lai Si Temple's Joss Stick Nurning Terrace is said to be the best place to see sunrise and sunset of Meili Snow Mountain. There are restaurants and places for accomodation around the temple. I think not necessary to book guesthouse. You can see and choose your favorite one when you get there.
