You should first get the Admission Letter and an original Visa Notification issued by the Chinese government or organizations authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the university, then you can apply for student visa. Otherwise, you can't apply for student visa. Will you study in China for more than 6 months, you apply for X visa, for less than 6 months study, apply for F visa.

The other requirements are:
1. your passport with at least 2 blank visa pages and at least 15 months validity left before expiration.
2. A truly and completely filled application form affixed with one passport-size or 2x2 colored photo, with white background, full-face front view, and no hat. Photo must be glued on the application form. Stapled pictures will not be accepted. Scanned photos will also not be accepted.
3. The applicant who will study in China for more than 6 months shall also provide a Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen (Forms and the lists of designated hospital are available at the visa counter). you'd better go to the consulate to get the visa and list of designated hospitals
