About:How to Buy Tickets

I am planning a trip with my wife and we wish to do all our travel through China by rail. We arrive in Guangzhou on 23rd July and will stay for 3 days before traveling to Guilin. We will stay in Guilin 3 nights before traveling to Xian. 3 nights at Xian then onto Beijing 4 nights then we will take the fast train to Shanghai. 4 nights at Shanghai before going to Hangzhou for 2 nights. Then onto Xiamen 3 night and finally to Shenzhen on 14th Aug. I would like to book soft sleepers where possible. With the uncertainty of being able to purchase tickets on the date required I am unable to confirm hotel bookings. Is it likely that I would be able to purchase these tickets with 2-3 days notice at this time of the year or will it conflict with school/college holiday periods? Your advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Many domestic colleges/universities began to have summer holidays from the end of July, when train tickets are hard to get. Maybe you can start your journey from August.

Have you done research on train travel in China or read/heard accounts of other people's experiences? Traveling by rail in China is normally not a pleasant experience, as it can be in other parts of the world, such as Europe. It can be an experience to do once in a while, but to have a holiday based solely on train travel within China may drive you crazy.

Agreed, you may need to consider some flying. The train from Guilin to Xi'an will be over 27 hours and from Beijing to Shanghai at least 10.

You won't be able to book your train travel all in advance, for some cities (Xiamen) you can only buy tickets a few days in advance. Even if you book through a travel agency, they're still confined to the schedule.
