The best way is to travel by bus, because it takes much longer time by train. However, there is a night train which can save you some time on the daytime, if you only have one day. If you take the morning bus, you will get to Huangshan at noon the earlest. So, my suggestion is take night train K8418 at Shanghai Railway Station at 17:49 and arrive in Huangshan at 9:05 in Huangshan. Then take bus to the scenic area about one hours later. Are you going to get back to Shanghai the same day you get there? The lastest bus is leaving at 15:30. Anyway, I think one day is not enough.

Shanghai SOuth Bus Station has four buses a day to Huangshan Scenic Area directly. Time of departure at 6:38, 7:58, 10:12 and 14:15. It takes nearly 6.5 hours to get there. It costs 140RMB. Suggest you go early in the morning. Better to buy the ticket in advance.
