About:Xinjiang Travel

I am planning at trip to Xinjiang and trying to figure out what to do with my last few days. I will have from July 17 - 19 (fly out of Urumqi on the 20th) to return to Urumqi from Yining. I am intrigued by the road to Korla. It appears there is not much in Korla itself, but I have read about the GanGou, Yanqi (and Baghrash Lake) and numerous ancient silk road sites. Is it possible to rent a car so I can stop/go wherever I want as opposed to taking a bus that does not stop? Are these sights worthwhile? Anything else you can suggest? Thank you very much for your help.
