Ms.chong, it is possible for your friend to apply for a visa on arrival at the entry ports of Shenzhen, the visa is only valid for 5 days, single entry, when he/she returns to Shenzhen from Hong Kong, he/she also need to apply for a visa on arrival again. It takes about 10 minutes.
