Mr. Johnnash: One of the requirements for a tourist visa in China is a round trip ticket and confirmed hotel booking.  What if I will not be granted a tourist visa or be denied of it, can it be refunded? Will it matter to the consul if I book only in a three star hotel or just a comfort inn? Will my chances be slim if I do just that? Hope you can enlighten me. Thank you.

It doesn't matter to the consul if you book a three-star hotel or just a comfortable inn. I think that you can get back some refund for your round-trip ticket and hotel booking if you cancell them.
