you have to leave your orginal passport in the embassy for Chinese visa application because Chinese visa will be stamped on the blank visa page of your passport. You can apply for same-day processing service if you don't want to pick up your paspsort on the same day, please submit application early in the morning, if you submit it late, you can't pick it up on the same day.

Does it mean if i submit to the embassy early morning, i can have it back at the end of the day without leaving it to hold over night?

Ms.Aubrey, if you submit the application to the embassy in early morning, you can take back your passport and visa in the afternoon, about 2:00 pm, not the end of the day.
