is it possible to stay with a friend instead of at a hotel and if so, what information should I provide to the embassy? so its not that going to be expensive for my trip?

you should provide an Invitation Letter from your friend and the copy of his passport and Chinese visa on his passport. If your friend is Chinese, the copy of his ID card is required
