I've travelled many times on the trains in China. My first choice for overnight travel is hard sleeper, lower berth. Soft sleeper is more comfortable, quiet and spacious but I like the experience of the people in the hard sleeper. Hard seats for day travel is ok if you don't mind the close proximity of many people, standing passengers may sometimes be crowding your space. The seats are usually have a firm cushion but not much room to stretch out. The aisles can occasionally be crowded. Soft seats are more comfortable and spacious but again not so much opportunity to socialize. Although I am very careful with my belongings to avoid theft, I believe it is a rare event. Likely the same as travel anywhere. I have never seen any evidence of physical violence. China is an exceptionally friendly place and I enjoy the social contact provided by train travel whether in the hard or soft cars.
