why did Chinese civilizations use gunpowder?

They invented gunpowder mainly due to an elixer to make someone immortal. That didn't work out so well. They realized It could heal some ailments. Then someone found out it was explosive and used it for cerimonys then another think realized it could be used for wepones and used it for fire arrows, cannons, and guns.
