You are not regarded as family members or relatives because you can't provide the certificate between you and your friend, such as the marriage liense, birth certificate, etc. The tourist visa (L) is also issued to foreigners who come to China for private purpose, so you can have a try by providing the Invitation Letter from your friend, copy of his passport and Chinese visa or residence permit, if your friend is Chinese, please provide the copy of his Identity card and household book.
