I a bit confused. Some people said can buy the train ticket to Hong Kong at guangzhou east railway station and some said can't. Would like to ask can we purchase the ticket on the spot or have to buy in advance?

Both of them are right. You could purchase a train ticket to HK at Guangzhou East Railway. However, it is always difficult to purchase a ticket on the spot. This is because the tickets are sold out 10~30 days in advance. So, it is why not~

So,anyway to purchase the train ticket in advance if we are not in Guangzhou?can purchase online or not?

The railway station doesn't support ticket booking online currently. So, you have to ask for help from an agent which requires some service charge.
