As I know, the host of the private house or you should have to go to the local police station with your passport and visa, as well as the host's Household Register. Then, the staff will require you to finish a form listing these necessary information. Very easy!
Here is what I found in Chinese: http://www.ahga.gov.cn/government/crjgl9.htm

Could not open website in the USA, very strange. I showed it to my Chinese wife and she still says that doesn't apply to me since we are married. Right now I don't know what to believe. I was going to sneak out and go to the police station, but I don't know what the household register is?
