It takes an overnight to reach Beijing from Shanghai. It takes off at 6pm and arrives the next morning at 8am. Other options are available too. That's an express train which cost around RMB500-800, I'm not too sure about the price. You need to check. As to Muslin food, sorry I can't help.

It took me 14 hours from beijing to shanghai (16pm - 8am). the price was 335 rmb for the hard bed class. there is an overnight express which leaves around 9pm in beijing and arrives at 9am next morning in shanghai. the fare is around 680 - 750 rmb for soft bed class, which is the most expensive class. there are 4 beds in each cabin in this class, the one closer to the floor are more expensive than the upper one. but i guess you can book the hard bed class in this train, too. this will be cheaper but not as convenient.

Mr Sabri,

You will find more information if you search "Shanghai to Beijing by train" in the web and go into 'wang jian shuo's blog'. You will find many photos of the train, schedules, fares and many other infos.

I find it very informative.

Salam, I just returned from Shanghai 2 weeks ago & there's a good chinese Muslim eatery just opposite of Shanghai Railway Hotel main entrance - location, 160, Guizhou Road. The hotel is very near Nanjing Road pedestrian street. Start walking from People's square subway station & along Nanjing Rd pedestrian street, locate bedding shop & Starway Hotel - from Starway Hotel there's a small street - walk straight all the way down & locate Shanghai Railway Hotel. The Chinese Muslim eatery is just opposite the hotel's main entrance.

They serve excellent beef noodles & beef & mutton rice dishes. Really nice! And dishes only cost from 10 yuan each. The eatery have all the dishes in pictures pasted on their walls, so you just point what you want.
