About:Chinese Embassy in Kenya

I am an american citizen currently in Kenya, traveling through East Africa. I have purchased a ticket to travel to Shanghai, China, on December 16, 2009, and need to obtain a tourist visa. I called the embassy in Nairobi and they said that they were not able to process Chinese visas to non-Kenyan residents. Is there ANY way I can obtain my visa and travel to China without sending my passport back to the U.S?
