Why did the chinese invent the compass? AARRGH I CANT FIND IT ANYWHERE

Is it invented in acient times. Two groups of people fight a war. As there are lots of fogs, it is difficult to make a direction. Thus, compass war invented to show the right direction! However, i do not know whether this explanation is reasonable, just for a reference!1
