About:FAQ of Chinese Visa Application

I am a India passport holder & I am employed in Shanghai. Can i bring my family on a tourist visa first & then apply for a resident visa with in 30 days.

No, you should apply for a dependent work visa for your family, adn then apply for a residence permit within 30 days after entering China.
You can't apply for residence permit with a China tourist visa.

1. Application form: All applicants should fill in one visa application form appropriately and authentically.
2. Applicant's passport valid for at least six months with at least 2 blank visa pages.
3. One recent passport size photograph.
4. One Passport photocopy.
5. Proof of Relative Relationship, e.g. Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificate, etc.
6. If your family will stay in China for more than 6 months, they will have to provide a Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen.

Thanks for the details.
I was also given an understanding by my local travel agent that for "Z" Visa (depedent visa) Visa notification is requried. how do i get that for my family. Initially when I had come to China I was given an visa notification form but that is handover to embassy. do i need to attach my work permit xerox copy ...is that called as Visa notification

No, you have to apply for the visa notice form from the the Ministries and Commissions of the State Council, the Government of all Provinces, Autonomous Regions, and Municipalities directly under the Central Government, and Foreign Affairs Offices and Bureaus of Economy and Commerce hereunder, and departments and units recognized by the Department of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.
