Yes, your husband should prepare the following ducoments:
1. His passport with blank pages and at least 6 months validity left before expiration.
2. A truly and completely filled application form affixed with one passport-sized photo.
3. Provide Proof of Relative Relationship, e.g. Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificate, etc.
4. If he will stay in China for more than 6 months, he has to provide a Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen (Forms and the lists of designated hospital are available at the visa counter).

Your husband can apply for a Residence permit for Alien Employee's family member.

To do it, your company needs to apply for a Z visa notification letter in the authority. With it and other documents mentioned by Mrs. Christina, he can apply for a Z visa in the Chinese consulate. And after entering into China, change the Z visa into a Residence permit which has the same valid period with you. It needs to be done within 30 days of arrival.
