You can have a try to provide the hotel reservation in his name and state the situation to visa officers on the visa application form. However, I can't make sure that the visa official will accept it.

Hi, I just got back from the embassy this morning, where I applied for my own tourist visa into China and I did not have to state the hotel I was staying at. I simply had to put "Hotel" and this was sufficient. This was suggested by the embassy staff themselves and it caused no problems.
