About:Chinese Embassy in Canada

I'm married to a chinese citizen and in China on a 6 month L visa. We just bought our first home here. If I were to apply for a Z visa, do I really need do go all the way back to Canada just to change it?

You can just change it in China. See the info. on the website below:
