About:Guilin Travel

I am going to Shanghai first in mid December to make photographs of the old city then I want to travel to Nanning, Guilin and Yangshuo in late December. Should I fly to Guilin or Nanning or take a train? Will it really be very cold? I do not speak Chinese, I am learning a little. Can I navigate to the areas around Guilin by Train speaking only English? I have had a friend who hired a guide. Is there an method to prearrange for a guide as I am a professional photographer and do not want to be in a group tour? Any suggestions I would greatly appreciate. I have three weeks for the entire trip.

Well, it is suggested that you take a flight to arrive in Nanning firstly. The train takes about 30 hours. Then, you could take a train from Nanning to arrive in Guilin in 6 hours. Yes, Dec is cold in these places but without snow. It is no problem for you to take flight or train with knowing a little Chinese. If you would like to have guide, you may considre looking for a private guide with the help of travel agency or internet.

I suggest you fly from Shanghai to Guilin then take a bus to Nanning for the ticket fare is cheaper. There is a flight run by Spring Airlines flies from Shanghai to Guilin, usually offers 70% discount. Even cheaper than the train ticket, if you book it in advance.
I can help you with your trip, but I'm not a professional tour guide. Or, I can recommend someone to you, whom is neither a tour guide. This site forbits any advertisments, so I can't give you my contact. Reply this if necessary.

PS. the train from Nanning to Guilin needs 4 hours and a half, not 6 hours. The bus the same.

I don't think it will be that cold. But again, I am a NY native so what do I know. I will be visiting Guilin (2nd trip) in the middle of October. You probably wants to take a plane there (about 3 hours from Shanghai), costs about 600 - 800 RMB roundtrip. While it's difficult to get around by yourself without knowing the language, I think you can hire an English speaking guide there. Remember Guilin is a very well developed tourist spot, you will definitely need to know the locals to find the pristine spots for your photography.

Nanning is warmer than other place. In December, Shanghai will be cold, so keep warming. Individually, I recommend you take railway from Guilin to Nanning, cheaper than any other transportation and more comfortable than taking a bus.
