About:China Transit Visa

Could you clarify what you mean (in the case of Visa Free Transit rules) by "do not leave the airport."? Does this mean that I have to stay within the transit area of the airport? Or can I go elsewhere in the airport to meet with friends who come to the airport to visit me?
