About:Chinese Embassy in Canada

The travel agency that I am going through says that in order to obtain a tourist visa my passport must be valid for 6 months from my departure date however, the China Embassy says it only needs to be valid for 4 months. If I leave for China at the beginning of October and my passport expires in March, will I be issued a visa or will I need to renew my passport with my Embassy?
