About:Chinese Embassy in U.K.

Hi I'm a UK national living in China for the summer on a Chinese category L tourist visa. I only have a single entry visa and have my flight booked back from beijing to England on the 12th september. However me and a friend want to go to Japan in our final week, I heard I shouldn't need to change my visa if I return from Japan to beijing and spend less than 24 hours in the airport, is there any truth in that or will I need to change my visa? Thanks
