Hello, Ni hao!

My husband and I would like to take the train from Beijing to Datong. Can somebody tell you whether I can buy tickets in advance, where is the best place, and how much for a soft berth?

Also we would like to take the train from JIAYUGUAN to LANZHOU later in our trip. Can we buy this ticket from Beijing in advance. If so, is this an open ticket (ie valid for a period of time)? Does anybody know how much one ticket cost for a soft berth?

No open ticket is available in China and the train ticket can only be bought at the departure city. Here I give you the trian information and you need to buy the tickets in advance.
Beijing / Datong K615　15:40 / 21:45 soft sleeper CNY159
Jiayuguan / Lanzhou many trians are avaialbe, duration 7-8 hours, soft sleeper CNY286

When I went from Nanjing to Urumqi I also bought a ticket for my journey from Urumqi to Shanghai at the train station in Nanjing; so, it is possible to buy a ticket at a station other than the originating station. There was an additional fee of 5 RMB.
